Resilience and Purpose: My 2025 Path

January 13, 2025 · Devona Olson

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season. Over winter break, I spent some much-needed downtime with my mother and friends, which gave me a chance to reflect on the past year. Honestly, school has been tougher than ever—difficult subjects, endless homework, SAT prep you name it! But what keeps me going is knowing I'm not alone in this.

One of the highlights of last year was all the volunteer work I got to be part of. Participating in the Zero Prostate Cancer event was incredibly rewarding—it was powerful to see survivors, as well as families who've lost loved ones, coming together for a shared cause. I've also been volunteering at Emerson House, a senior living facility for dementia patients. I have a pen pal there, and it's such a great feeling to spend time with them.

This year, I'm planning to start volunteering at a hospital, and I'm really excited about it. Helping others gives me a sense of purpose.

January 12th was my father's birthday—he would've turned 55 this year. My mother and I honored him by making his favorite meal that he used to make for me twice/week (too often!) and a birthday cake. Grief is still a part of my life. But I always hold on to the promise I made to him: to stay strong for him. My father continues to inspire me every day. Even while battling his own illness, he always found ways to help others. My mother often says I remind her of him. It's comforting to know that, in a way, he's still with me, living through the person I am becoming.

I know this year is going to be challenging with college prep and my IB Diploma courses, but I'm starting to understand that it's a journey, not a race.

Wishing everyone an amazing start to the year! — Devona
