Spring Forward: Reflection, Resilience, and Raising Awareness

Spring is just around the corner, and with it comes a sense of renewal. March is a month of change—the weather is beginning to shift, days are getting longer, and there's fresh energy in the air. But for me, March is also a time of deep reflection, especially when it comes to cancer awareness.

This month marks Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. According to the American Cancer Society, about 107,320 new cases of colon cancer and 46,950 new cases of rectal cancer are expected in the U.S. by 2025. The good news is that the overall rate of colon cancer diagnoses has been declining since the mid-1980s, mostly because more people are getting screened and making healthier lifestyle choices. But here's the scary part: while older adults have seen this decline, the number of younger people under 50 being diagnosed has actually been increasing by 2.4% every year between 2012 and 2021. Experts say obesity is a major factor, along with poor diets. On top of that, all the lifestyle choices that increase the risk of colorectal cancer can also disrupt the gut microbiome, which might be linked to cancer risks as well.

Speaking of the microbiome, my mother convinced me to watch this Netflix documentary called Hack Your Health: The Secret of Your Gut. I was reluctant at first, but I'm so glad I gave it a chance! It dives into how the gut microbiome impacts our overall health. No more Starbucks or Dutch Bros for me!

I'm also excited to share that I've started new volunteer work at the hospital. I've been assigned to assist post-surgery recovery patients and medical staff. Being in a hospital setting has opened my eyes to the resilience of both patients and medical staff. I've had the chance to talk with people going through incredibly difficult times, and they always manage to smile—even when I know they are in pain. Their strength is inspiring, and in a way, it reminds me of my father. He always found ways to help others, even when he was struggling himself. Volunteering has given me a new perspective.

Volunteering at the hospital is incredibly rewarding, but I'll be honest—it can also be emotionally overwhelming. Being surrounded by illness and uncertainty brings back memories of my dad's battle with cancer. But I try to focus on the fact that if I can bring even a little comfort to someone who's struggling, I'm honoring the compassion he showed me.

As I navigate my own challenges—balancing school, college prep, volunteering, and personal struggles—I'm learning to be patient with myself. For anyone else struggling with loss, illness, or just the weight of everyday challenges, know that you are not alone. Life isn't about being perfect or having it all figured out; it's about showing up, even on the hard days, and finding moments of light in the darkness.

Happy March, everyone! — Devona
